“Shimmy It Forward” Scholarship: 2026 Recipients Announced

Stephanie is proud to present the second yearly “Shimmy It Forward” Scholarship!

Congrats to this year’s 6 winners! Below is an amalgamation of their responses to the application questions. Thanks to everyone who applied and shared so generously!

What do you feel is unique about belly dancing as an art/dance form?

Belly dancing is a "one of a kind" art form that "honors dancers of various body shapes and sizes," providing a rare space where we can "celebrate and truly accept" our bodies "just as it is." It is physically unique because "small isolations turn into a surprisingly powerful full-body workout" where the skill of controlling "hips and abdominal" creates "illusions with the attire" that look like "magic."

Beyond the movement, this "empowering dance" is steeped in a "rich history" that allows us to "tell stories" and find a "deep connection" through the music’s "beautiful beats."

What are your belly dancing goals and aspirations in the next year?

Goals include reaching the "next level of confidence" to overcome being "shy" and "really pour" oneself into every movement. Aspirations include mastering "isolations, transitions, and following the music" while working toward performing a "solo dance" that appears "effortless, fluid and graceful."

Applicants hope to "bring out a dancing persona" and "gain a better sense of self love" so that we can leave every class "feeling proud" of our progress.

What impact will the award have on you, financially and otherwise?

The scholarship would ease the "added costs of everyday life," especially for those who sometimes must financially "choose who gets to do class" — and kids, not these mothers, will always get priority. Juggling full-time work, long commutes and even "hospital bills" means recipients will feel motivated to keep coming despite having so much going on.

Ultimately, it serves as a vital tool for "self-care" that lifts a "mental burden" and allows us to use our savings for other necessities like a child’s "academic expenses".
