It is with great pleasure that I write this letter recommending Stephanie Chiang as a performer and educator of bellydance.

I am April Rose, a dance teacher and performer specializing in bellydance, raqs sharqi, and transnational fusion. The interplay between precision and interpretation

I’ve always been fascinated by the possibility of two (or more) things being true at the same time: excitement and anxiety, curiosity and fear, and so on. To me, the beauty of belly dancing rests in the dynamic interplay between precision and interpretation. Regardless of the particular moves that I select, there’s a way that I choose to do them; doing them exactly as I intend is precision. As difficult as that can be, I try to remind myself that the magic lies in the interpretation. Getting lost in moments of music so beautiful that I feel completely immersed only happens if I trust myself to come back. Mastering this interplay is something that I will never feel like I’ve fully accomplished and will happily work on the rest of my life.
